In Memoriam

13 years ago, the Muppets and their fans lost a dear friend. Muppeteer Richard Hunt, performer of Scooter, janice, Sweetums, Beaker, Statler, Don Music, Forgetful Jones and Junior Gorg passed away from complications due to HIV. He is missed very much by the people he worked with as well as his fans.

There's something about Richard that makes it almost impossible not to like him. I always enjoy watching any scene with any of his characters, whether it's poor Beaker being subjected to the latest Muppet Labs invention to Scooter reminding Kermit that his uncle owns the theatre, to Junior Gorg trying to catch those pesky Fraggles or the Wild Impresario reveling in some of his favorite sounds.

Thank you for the memories, Richard. And as Mudwell the Mudbunny once sang, I really do hope that "we'll meet again someday".

Here are a few links of interest:

Janice "Fer Sure!" - Byron's fansite for Janice, the lead guitarist of the Electric Mayhem and Sgt. Floyd Pepper's leading lady.

15 Seconds to Curtain! - My fansite dedicated to Scooter the go-fer, my favorite of both Richard's characters and the Muppets.

Was just browsing my flist* when I came across an entry from a RL friend of mine. We've known each other since high school (he was a year behind me) and ended up going to the same college. We even technically graduated in the same class ('04), since I got all of my required credits and left at the end of '03's fall semester but Monmouth only had commencement exercises in the spring. Plus we're friends with his family because his mom was a Scoutmaster and she helped my brother get his Eagle.

So anyway I read my friend's entry about his first week back at grad school. In the entry he stated about how he misses a guy that we both knew down in Monmouth (he was part of my friend's group of friends on campus, and he was also in the wind ensemble with me). And that's when I realize that my friend likes this guy in a romantic sense!

It totally floored me. I had no idea my friend was gay, let alone dating this other guy I knew from school and was sort-of friends with. And I'm not against it either; it's just that he's one of the last people I expected to be a homosexual. Especially given the times during my sophomore year at school where we went out together, which some people might think of as "dates" (hell, my best friend even thought they were).

And I'd love to reply to his entry, ask him how things are going, how long he and this other guy have been an item, etc. Except...no one in my RL circle of friends knows that I keep an LJ. They don't know about my "other identity" as Lady Iapetus, writer of fanfiction. And I'm sort of concerned about what they'll say. Especially him, since he was in one of my creative writing classes and all he's seen me write is poetry.

So, I guess you could say that I'm at a crossroads.

*Friends list, not to be confused with Franz Liszt ;)
