20 Things 'Bout Me
Okay, seems there's this meme going around where I write down twenty things about me that you may or may not know already. And since we all know I'm one to follow the crowd, here goes:
1. I lived in three different cities before I was three years old. After I was born (in Illinois), my dad was transfered out to Ceder Rapids, Iowa so we lived there for a year. Then the company my dad worked for was bought out (or something; I'm fuzzy on the details), so Dad went to work for Sunstrand and we moved back to IL. Mom and Dad bought a house in Rockford before moving back to Byron, ironically to the house they had lived in before moving out to Iowa. Go figure that.
2. I've loved to read since before I was even able to. According to my folks I'd look through the magazines at my grandparents house, obviously pretending I was reading. Somewhere there's photographic evidence to prove it.
3. My first pet was a cocker spaniel named Dusty that my parents had gotten not long after they were married. We used to have "foot-fights", where I'd push my feet against his front paws. Dusty also loved to chase the sprinkler in the backyard. We had to put him to sleep because he got cancer, and Dad buried him in the backyard next to the toolshed.
4. When I was in first grade I wrote my first crossover fanfiction. The teacher had given us the assignment to write a story about Rudolph's nose going out. Everyone else wrote about Rudolph changing his nose like it was a burnt-out lightbulb, or changing the lightbulb in his nose. I wrote about Tenderheart Bear (of the Care Bears) coming to the North Pole and using his Care Bear Stare to restore Rudolph's nose.
5. I used to be able to sign the entire last verse of Silent Night.
6. My first (and possibly only) brush with the supernatural happened when I was about seven or so, after Dusty died. One day I went out to where our swingset and sandbox were usually set up and found a little ceramic figurine of a brown dog lying in that spot. To this day I have no idea how in the world it got there or where it came from (our backyard was fenced in). Too bad I lost the thing, though.
7. While I was in Chicago to see "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat", I saw (or think I saw) actor Mike Speller. People might remember him as the teacher from the old Nickelodeon tv show "Welcome Freshma" (if people remember "Welcome Freshman", that is). We walked passed him on our way to a restaurant for dinner after the show.
8. One summer when I was elementary school I took a tap, ballet and jazz dance class. All I learned was that my feet can't stand dancing, and neither can I.
9. I once conned one of my cousins into giving up a doll of hers that I really, really liked. Our parents found out about it, and my mom made me give my cousin one of my toys (a My Little Pony) in return so that it was a fair trade.
10. I'm a big Nancy Drew fangirl. The classic series is my favorite; I don't like the "Nancy Drew Casefiles" because sometimes they were too much like a soap opera, and because Carolyn Keene broke up Nancy and Ned as a couple. Even today I still like to pick up one of those books and read it, and I'm constantly looking to add to my collection.
11. When I was in fourth grade I won a blue ribbon and a "Reserve Champion" ribbon for two ceramic bookends I had done for a 4-H project.
12. In high school I dated this kid named Jason for two weeks; I broke up with him after I realized that a) I wasn't ready for a relationship and b) I didn't like him in that way anyway. It wasn't until after my best friend dated him for a while that we realized what a jerk he was.
13. By the time I was thirteen I had been in two spring pageants for my church. Both times I was the lead...and both times I played a boy. To this day I won't watch the videotapes Mom has of both performances. I don't look back fondly on either of them.
14. In fifth grade I won my first and only prize for writing a short story. It was for the county paper's annual Halloween Spooky Story contest. The story was about a guy named Fred who went camping in the woods and wound up being captured by an evil ghost. I won $15, which I used to buy myself a doll at the local Ben Franklin.
15. My maternal grandmother isn't actually my biological grandmother. My mom's mom, Cheryl, died of ovarian cancer before I was born.
16. When I was in second grade my goal in life was to be a palentologist.
17. My junior year in high school my clarinet broke during a half-time show. I was just moving along to my next assigned place on the field when without warning the bottom half of the instrument just up and fell onto the field. So I did the only thing I could do under the circumstances - pick it up, stick it back together quickly and bullshit my way through the rest of the show.
18. During a Christmas party with my friends in high school, we broke some person's mailbox. We were out driving around the back roads and subdivisions of the city. My friend Kelly noticed that a mailbox we had driven past was open, so she told Peter (the driver) to go back and close it. Peter put the car in reverse and backed up to close the mailbox, and ended up hitting it and ripping the door of the mailbox clean off. We peeled rubber out of there.
19. While trying to enter the garage I accidentally broke the passenger side mirror on my mom's old minivan. I had entered the garage crooked, so I was trying to correct. At one point I came too close to the edge of the garage door and hit the mirror as I was backing out. About half of the thing came off before I put on the break and put the van in park. Scared the shit out of me. And to this day, Mom won't let me drive her new minivan.
20. My cat was once radioactive. He was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism a few years ago, and he wasn't getting any better so Mom and Dad decided to go for this new treatment. It involved the cat being injected with radioactive idoine. When he came home he was still a bit "hot", so we had to be careful about how much we touched him and such over the next couple of weeks. We joked about him glowing in the dark.
