It is finished
First off, before I get to my reaction and all the spoilery stuff...Mom, so what the hell if it took me five hours to read the book? *blows raspberry at mother*
Now, for my reaction. I can almost guarentee there will be spoilers here, because there will be plot bunnies that the muses have forced on me. So...
Well, if I had put real money on Filch being the person to use magic later in life, I'd have lost big time. Dang, I'm kinda disappointed. To tell the truth what I was really hoping for was a chance to point at the fandom at-large who were all like "It'll be Petunia" or "It'll be Dudley" and say, "Ha! In your faces!"
I wasn't surprised at some of the deaths in DH. Remus and Mad-Eye and Pettigrew...I expected it. Truthfully I'd been expecting their deaths since Sirius fell through the Veil in OotP; simply put, the Marauders were dying out. Snape I was also expecting, but I was partially expecting him to nobly sacrifice himself doing it. But Snape did wind up being redeemed at the end, so I'm satisfied. But Fred and Tonks and little Colin Creevy...completely blindsided. Same with Hedwig and Dobby.
It was nice to see a lot of the action taking place away from Hogwarts for a change. I'm predicting that a lot of Harry/Hermione stories will pop up on FF.Net within the next few weeks or so based on the flaming row the Trio had that left in Ron's temporary leavetaking, with Harry attempting to comfort Hermione and Hermione deciding that Ron really isn't the person she loves after all and I'm going to stop right here because I'm nauseating myself.
The Muggle-born Registration thing...scary. Especially considering that Marvel just spent, what, part of last year and part of this year on the 'Civil War' arc, which focused on not just mutant registration but superhuman registration?
As for the "Nineteen Years Later" epilogue...sneaky, JKR, very sneaky. She said she'd never do a "Twenty Years Later", but that didn't mean she couldn't go less. I'm wondering where JKR got some of her names, though. Albus Severeus Potter...that makes sense. Hugo Weasley...not too bad, I've read worse in fanfics, certainly. But Scorpius Malfoy? Ugh. Let's hope that Draco's unnamed wife picked the name, and not Draco. I'd imagine he'd have better taste than that. And I think Lily Potter II is just the cutest thing ever. Dollars to donuts that her middle name is "Ariana".
Oh, and the idea of Ronald Billius Weasley behind the wheel of a car? Sca-ry...
I wish that JKR had given us some closure with the Dursleys. All we know is that they left 4 Privet Drive, Dudley reconciled with Harry (sort of), members of the Order took them away and that was that. So...what happened afterwards? Did they get taken out by Voldemort and the Death Eaters when they were looking for Harry? Did they all survive and eventually come back to Privet Drive? Where are they?
And so, of course, after I finish the book (after 1 in the morning) my muses have to start throwing the Harry Potter plot bunnies around again. Mainly what they were trying to do was adjust HP canon around Daisy so that DH would fit into my "Heart of a Hufflepuff" universe. Oddly enough, the biggest problem point is the epilogue: I can't decide on a definitive "Happily Ever After" for Daisy. What kind of job does she have? Does she remain single or is she married? Do I pair her up with an OC or a canon character? If it's a canon character, I've got two in the running: Neville Longbottom and George Weasley. I've always leaned toward pairing Daisy up with Neville, but after DH I couldn't get rid of the image of Daisy visiting a depressed George and all but smacking him out of his funk.
My HP/Gummi Bears plot bunny has been nearly resurrected by DH, but I think I'm going to do quite a bit of revamping of it. I think I'm probably going to set it in the epilogue and make Lily Potter II the main human character, rather than making it an AU of HBP.
The muses still want a T*Witches/HP crossover. I have no idea how in the world I would go about doing it, but...they're muses. What're ya gonna do?
And Shaun, if you ever do make that icon...hell, I'd use it.
